Meet Prince Albert I Outside the Palace

You may come across this stone statue whilst exploring the Prince’s Palace on your Monaco yacht charter vacation visit to Monaco-Ville. The statue depicts Prince Albert I and was presented to the prince to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his reign by foreign residents of Monaco.

Albert I ruled from 1889 to 1922 and was famously passionate about oceanography. He founded the Oceanographic Institute Foundation which later led to the opening of the world-renowned Oceanographic Museum of Monaco with a must-see aquarium.

Remember the Days of Francesco Grimaldi

Meet the statue of Grimaldi - cloaked in a monk-like disguise and armed with a hidden sword - outside the Prince's Palace of Monaco at night, and he may give you a fright. The Genoese leader of the Guelphs famously captured the Rock of Monaco in January 1927, earning the nickname of il Malizia ("the Cunning") in the process.

In his Franciscan monk attire, Grimaldi was entered the castle's gates and then seized the castle with his posse, including his cousin, Ranier I, the Lord of Cagnes. So significant in Monaco's history is the battle for "the rock" that is commemorated on the Monegasque coat of arms.

Francesco Grimaldi would hold the citadel for four years before being chased out of Monaco by the Genoese people. Grimaldi would be succeeded by his cousin, whose Grimaldi descendants still rule today.

Visit the Palace of Royalty

From ancient Greek times to the end of the Roman era, the rocky promontory and natural harbour of Monaco have adorned the pages of history books. The palace was built shortly after Monaco became established in the 12th century, beginning as a fortress to protect itself against pirates.

On Monaco's return to the Grimaldi family later in 1814, the palace was in dire need of restoration - a task which Prince Rainier expertly handled, restoring its lost glory to its current state, admired by many from near and far. From June to October you can visit the palace and marvel at is royal courtyard, paved with 3 million white and coloured pebbles which create beautiful geometric patterns. 16th century frescoes depicting scenes from mythology adorn the walls, surrounded by tall columns and a double-revolution staircase which create a sight which is truly not to be missed.
