Guide to Cat Island

Cultural and charming

Situated in the centre of the Bahamas and barely skimming the Tropic of Cancer line, Cat Island is a perfect tropical paradise of glorious year-round climate, picture-perfect beaches and unparalleled natural beauty.

Named after the infamous pirate Artur Catt who was once a frequent visitor, Cat Island boasts a long, fascinating and often colourful history. Amongst its 150 square miles of land, made up of rolling hills, charming villages and pink-sand strewn coastline, are a scattering of remnants of bygone which nod to the islands' past.

Hundreds of abandoned stone cottages, 200-year-old slave houses and crumbling remains of the cotton and sisal plantation days now sit peacefully entwined into the forest of vine and trees against the deep turquoise of the sea. While they act as a sad reminder, they are also an important piece of history that has shaped Cat Island into the diverse and cultural hub that it is today.

The best views of the island and its surrounding islets - aside from the decks of your own private charter yacht - are from its highest point of Mount Alvernia (also known as Como Hill) which rises to 206 feet (63 m) and is topped by a monastery called The Hermitage. Trips out to the outlying islands, especially at sunset, are also a must when you can really take in the beauty of the Bahamas in total privacy and tranquility.

There is also plenty to keep you entertained on Cat Island if you enjoy the outdoors and a popular pastime here is kayaking through the many winding rivers through tropical mangroves.
