Founded under Venetian rule, the charming fishing village of Assos lies on the west coast of Kefalonia in the Ionian archipelago and served as the administrative capital of northern Kefalonia from 1593.
For sheer beauty and charm, it doesn’t get much better than this tiny harbourside village, characterised by its traditional architecture, peaceful landscape and pretty scalloped bays.
Today, with only a hundred or so inhabitants, it is one of the most beautiful spots on the island. Dominated by the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle, the colourful houses of Assos are built on a small peninsula, with locals offering a warm welcome to anyone who visits.
Meander the winding alleys to discover the colorful houses awash with pink and white blooms, alongside pretty terraces and old churches. There are a few small taverns and restaurants perched on the quayside overlooking the bay, where you can idle under a Grecian sun and enjoy the picture-postcard views across the bay as you tuck into a delicious Greek salad or sip an ice-cold cold beer.
