10 things to do on Bimini Island while chartering in the Bahamas

By Julie Gabriel   13 November 2023

Located just 50 miles off Florida’s coast, Bimini offers visitors a slice of Bahamian paradise which is easily accessible from the United States. This small island may only be seven miles long, but it is filled with a myriad of activities to guarantee 24/7 entertainment during your luxury yacht charter.

1. Bimini Road

Also known as the 'Road to Atlantis,' the origins of this mysterious underwater rock formation have puzzled scientists and explorers for years. Be sure to take advantage of the snorkeling equipment onboard your motor yacht charter to decide for yourself whether this underwater landmark is a natural occurrence, or indeed a manmade structure that points to the legendary city of Atlantis. Whatever you decide, everyone in your charter party will agree that the sight of these rocks set in the turquoise blue waters typical of the Bahamas is an unforgettable one.

2. Deep-Sea Fishing

Bimini is often called the ‘Big Game Fishing Capital of the Bahamas.’ As the island is nestled in the Gulf Stream’s warm waters, anglers have access to this highway for migrating fish and food that have allowed local species like blue marlin, tuna, and wahoo to grow to record sizes. Its reputation for offering some of the best fishing opportunities in the Caribbean has attracted many famous people, including literary giant Ernest Hemingway who would escape to Bimini on his boat, Pilar.

After spending a morning soaking up the panoramic sea views over breakfast, grab your fishing equipment and be wowed by the sights that lay below the waters’ surface.

3. Bimini Biological Field Station

Bimini consists of various islets with diverse ecosystems, from mangrove forests to seagrass beds. For those who want to explore the sea in a different way, visit the Bimini Biological Field Station. Known as the Shark Lab, this world-renowned research facility offers guided tours that allow you to learn about shark research and conservation, while also being taken by the undeniably cute baby nurse and lemon sharks that you can pet.

4. Golf Cart Exploration

The best way to see Bimini is by golf cart. Rent one for the day and explore the island at your own pace. Stop by local shops, hidden beaches, and historical landmarks while taking in the island's natural beauty.

5. Scuba Diving

The crystal-clear waters around Bimini are perfect for snorkeling, scuba diving, and underwater photography. Not only do these conditions make for a visually stunning experience, but they also provide safe and enjoyable conditions for water-based activities for all ages and skill levels.

Bimini offers multiple dive sites ranging from reefs to wrecks. Some of the popular sites include Tuna Alley, Sapona Shipwreck, and Moray Alley. We also recommend visiting Rainbow Reef where, as the name suggests, the vibrant colors of the local sealife and coral reefs make for captivating views.

6. Watersports

No charter in Bimini would be complete without taking advantage of the water toys onboard your superyacht. By exploring Bimini’s mangroves and shallow waters by paddleboard or kayak, you’ll be mesmerized by the crystal-clear waters and the calm serenity surrounding you.

7. Alice Town

Stroll through Alice Town to soak up some authentic Bahamian atmosphere. You'll find pastel-colored conch shacks, lively bars, and quaint shops selling local crafts. Don't forget to try a traditional conch salad or the Bahamian staple, Kalik beer.

During your visit, be sure to check out the Dolphin House: built by historian and poet, Ashley Saunders, this unique little house resembles something that famous architect, Antoni Gaudi might have built. Its walls are covered with colorful mosaics of dolphins made out of sea glass, shells, bottles, and more in an homage to the Saunders’ family’s historical business as scavengers from shipwrecks. It is a charming and incredibly unique slice of local history worth a visit while on the island.

8. Sunset at Bimini Bay

No visit to Bimini would be complete without watching the sunset over the waters of Bimini Bay. The vibrant hues of pinks, oranges, and purples reflecting over the calm waters are the perfect way to end your day in this tropical paradise. Head back onboard your superyacht to enjoy the view from the comfort of your jacuzzi, with your favorite drink in hand.

9. Try typical Bahamian cuisine

Freshly made conch salad from Stuart's

The Bahamas is home to the famous conch salad, a refreshing seafood dish that combines this local delicacy with chopped tomato, peppers, and lime juice. We recommend visiting Stuart's Conch Stand where this salad is made in front of you. Take your salad from the friendly staff at the stand to enjoy sitting on the warm, white sand.

10. Dine at Resorts World Bimini

For those in your charter party wanting a more upscale dining experience, head to the Sushi Bar at Resorts World Bimini. Everything from the sashimi to the uramaki is beautifully presented, making it a chic spot perfect for a romantic dinner or a sophisticated night out. Their drink menu is also noteworthy, featuring a selection of fine wines and Japanese sake.

With its wide array of activities, Bimini is the perfect stop off while chartering in Florida, or in the Bahamas. If you would like to incorporate any of these recommended activities into your next Bahamas charter, then be sure to speak to your preferred charter broker
